Maulid Nabi adalah peringatan hari lahir Nabi Muhammad SAW, yang di Indonesia perayaannya jatuh pada setiap tanggal 12 Rabiul Awal dalam penanggalan Hijriyah. Kata maulid atau milad dalam bahasa Arab berarti hari lahir. Perayaan Maulid Nabi merupakan tradisi yang berkembang di masyarakat Islam jauh setelah Nabi Muhammad SAW wafat. Secara subtansi, peringatan ini adalah ekspresi kegembiraan dan penghormatan kepada Nabi Muhammad.
Peringatan hari lahir Nabi Muhammad SAW diyakini telah dikenal sejak tahun kedua hijriah. Namun, ada juga yang meyakininya telah ada sejak zaman Nabi Muhammad SAW. Perayaan maulid Nabi SAW sudah dilakukan masyarakat muslim sejak tahun kedua Hijriah. Catatan tersebut juga merujuk pada kitab “Wafa’ul Wafa bi Akhbar Darul Mustafa” karangan Nuruddin.
Seorang Jenderal dan pejuang muslim asal Kurdi bernama Salahuddin Ayyubi ingin merayakan maulid Nabi menjadi tradisi bagi umat islam di seluruh dunia. Namun, gagasan Salahuddin ditentang oleh banyak ulama, Akan tetapi Salahuddin menegaskan bahwa perayaan maulid Nabi hanyalah kegiatan menyemarakkan syiar agama. Maka pada bulan Dzulhijjah yang bertepatan dengan bulan ibadah haji, Salahuddin yang pada saat itu sebagai penguasa Haramain mengeluarkan instruksi kepada seluruh jamaah haji agar segera mensosialisasikan kepada masyarakat islam yang berada di kampung halamannya untuk merayakan hari lahir Nabi Muhammad SAW.
Akhirnya pada tahun 580 Hijriah atau 1184 Masehi bertepatan tanggal 12 Rabiul-Awwal dirayakannya Maulid Nabi dengan berbagai kegiatan yang membangkitkan semangat umat Islam. Pada saat itu Salahuddin mengadakan sayembara penulisan sejarah Nabi dan dimenangkan oleh Syeikh Al-Barzanji. Sejak saat itu maulid nabi dirayakan di seluruh dunia.

However, there are also those who believe it has existed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The celebration of the Prophet’s maulid has been carried out by the Muslim community since the second year of Ilijri.
